What is "旬（Syun）"?

前回（ぜんかい）のブログで「旬（しゅん）」について少しだけ触（ふ）れたので、
今日は「旬」についてお話しようと思います。

Since I briefly mentioned “syun” or “best time of the year for” in the previous blog, today I’ll talk about "syun".
みなさんの国には季節（きせつ）がいくつありますか。
ご存知（ぞんじ）のように日本には四季（しき）があります。
そのため、食材（しょくざい）には最（もっと）も新鮮（しんせん）でおいしい（じき）があり、それを「旬」と言っています。
How many seasons are there in your country?
There are four seasons in Japan as you may know.
Syun is that time of the year when food ingredients are the freshest and most delicious.
私の周（まわ）りには３月に日本に行くという人が多（おお）いので、今日は春（はる）の初（はじ）めごろの旬の食べ物についてお話しましょう。旬のものは、よく採（と）れるので安価（あんか）になるだけでなく、栄養価（えいようか）も高いので食べない手はないですね。
Today let's talk about the food that’s in season around the beginning of spring. Because there are many people around me who will go to Japan in March.
Something that is in season is well-produced. It’s not only inexpensive but it also has high nutritional value so you have no choice but to eat it.
地域（ちいき）によって少し違（ちが）いはありますが、魚だと鯛（たい）が旬です。
鯛は「めでたい」という言葉から縁起（えんぎ）のいい魚といわれていて、色々なお祝（いわ）い事（ごと）に使われます。この時期の鯛は、色が鮮（あざ）やかにもなることから「桜鯛（さくらだい）」とも呼ばれています。
There are small differences depending on the region but the fish that’s in season is “tai” or sea bream.
Sea bream is used in a variety of occasions as it has been said that lucky fish “tai” comes from the word “medetai” or “call for a celebration”.
This time of the year the sea bream is also known as "Sakura-dai" or Sakura sea bream from the fact that its color becomes vivid.

野菜（やさい）だと菜（な）の花（はな）が旬です。日本人は菜の花が咲くのを見ると「春が来たなあ」と感（かん）じます。もちろん花を飾（かざ）って楽（たの）しむこともできますが、花の蕾（つぼみ）とやわらかい茎（くき）の部分を茹（ゆ）でて食べると春の味（あじ）がします。
In regard to vegetables Rape blossom is in season. Japanese see the Rape blossoms bloom and feel "I think spring has come."
You of course can also enjoy the decorative flowers, and eat boiled bud and a soft stem part of the flower and taste this delicacy of the season.
果物（くだもの）だと苺（いちご）が旬です。新鮮な苺はもちろんですが、デザートやお菓子（かし）にも苺味のものがたくさん出回（でまわ）ります。そう、日本人の好きな「季節限定」のメニューや商品（しょうひん）で、苺は大人気です。とくにケーキやチョコレート、飲み物など、いろいろなところで苺を使った食べ物を見ることができるでしょう。
The fruit that’s in season is strawberry. Fresh strawberries, of course, desserts, sweets and many strawberry-flavored things are widely available.
So, among Japanese favorite "seasonal limited edition" menus and products , strawberry is very popular. In particular, cakes and chocolate, drinks and so on, you'll be able to see that strawberry is used in a variety of foods.
ところで「今、旬の人！」などという言葉を雑誌（ざっし）やウェブサイトの見出（みだ）しで見たことがありませんか。最近は、「旬」と言う言葉を食べ物だけでなく、話題（わだい）の人や物（もの）にもつかうことがあります。絵里子塾も「今、最も旬なウェブサイト！」になればいいなあ…なんて。
By the way "This person is in, now!" (ima, syun no hito !) or have you never seen the words, such as under the heading of magazines and websites. Recently, not only is the word "season" for food, you may also use it for the topic of people and things.
